Congratulations, Duane! Our 2021 Nurse of the Year!

Nurse of the year, Duane

Congratulations to Duane, our Nurse of the Year for 2021! šŸ„³Ā

Duane is always willing to go above and beyond, and receives excellent feedback from all clients and facilities he works with. He has also introduced other nurses to Thornbury and his colleagues describe him as a “really great nurse to work with”.

We spoke to Duane about his win and what he loves most about being a nurse. Here’s what he had to say:

How long have you been working with Thornbury Nursing?
I have been with Thornbury Nursing since September 2020.

What do you enjoy most about your job?
Patient care, especially in a hospital setting involving multiple disciplines. What I enjoy most is the team effort in which every discipline gets to share their knowledge and skills for a common purpose. From working with the doctors to come up with a plan specifically tailored for a patient’s diagnosis, to helping the CNA (certified nursing assistant) bathe a patient. It gives me a great sense of satisfaction and pride and, overall, makes the job enjoyable.

What attracted you to join Thornbury Nursing?
I love that Thornbury provides great compensation. It makes me feel valued not only as a nurse, but also as a person.

How do you feel about being our Nurse of the Year?
I am so thankful and honored. I appreciate the acknowledgment and recognition. The funny thing is that my sister, who is a doctor, is ā€œintern of the yearā€ at her work – so now I can brag with her! šŸ˜„

What do you love about being a nurse?
Being a nurse is a career like no other. I have the privilege of connecting with patients in my care on a very intimate level. Whether itā€™s professionally, personally, or even spiritually – itā€™s a privilege I never take for granted. I love to think that there is a purpose for me having a patient, and I plan on giving them the best care possible. I enjoy going that extra mile for the patients in my care (especially those who cannot do for themselves). I love it when I have the extra time to comb my patients hair, cut their nails, or even just simply moisturize their lips. Itā€™s the simplest things that makes me enjoy being a nurse.

Thank you for being an amazing Thornbury nurse, Duane!
